Work

strike anywhere, 2010

Strike Anywhere is an ongoing collection of small bookworks/multiples that will be fabricating over the next year as it combines aspects of printmaking, installation and photography in miniature book form. Each piece contains a series of 25 handmade matchbooks assembled in a velvet lined wooden display case.

Each piece in the series will focus on the pairing of a Holocaust survivor and their child or grandchild. This particular project focuses on the ways in which trauma is passed on and the ways in which second generational distances change and shape cultural memory. I will begin with partnering with Baycrest (the predominantly Jewish retirement home in Toronto) by interviewing and being in contact with patients to create a type of 'portrait' in book form of the survivor and their family member. Using archival photos, family documents I will create new photographs along with text based work that will focus on their personal traumas and journeys.
